Flower bouquets make for favoured presents in Odisha capital for New Year

Bhubaneswar: No commemorative occasion is complete without flowers: be it birthdays, anniversaries, religious rituals, weddings or even funerals. From vibrant bouquets to fragrant and vivid decorative accessories, these plant products are must-haves everywhere.

With New Year celebrations waning now, Odisha Sun Times went around the city on a flowerwatch spree to gauge how brisk the business was for the bygone festive season.

Florists dotting the stretch on Janpath were still busy arranging bouquets and decorative pieces for customers who are still presenting bunches of flower to their near and dear ones. From garlands of marigold to handheld bouquets of an assortment of different flower varieties, Bhubaneswarites opted for customised and stylised pieces in various shapes and sizes. Corporate houses in the city were the priority customers in flower stalls because of the large orders they placed.

Roses of colours such as orange, pink, white and yellow, carnations, oriental lilies, Asiatic lilies, orchids were some of the favourites this season. Moreover, neatly arranged bouquets also contain fillers such as leaves of dracaena and myrtle, statice flower, snapdragon and sprigs of gyp and feverfew.

Nowadays, materials such as coloured mesh paper, glitter, sheer ribbons, baskets and even vases are also used to create elegantly styled bouquets that can be kept as show pieces, as well.

Single flower pieces such as gerbera, gladys, long stemmed rose, lily, orchid, etc. wrapped in transparent sheet, sprinkled with fragrant water and glitter have also been favourites this season.

Wedding season is another time of the year when flower arrangements are in great demand for beautifying and adorning the groom’s car, stage, backdrop, wedding mandap and venue gates. Mostly festoons of gerbera, cascading bunches of lilies, garlands of marigold and jasmine are used for such purposes.

Red roses are favoured on wedding anniversaries and especially on Valentine’s Day.

Bangalore is the preferred flower hub of Bhubaneswar florists when it comes to sourcing exotic flowers. “We get roses and lilies from Bangalore and orchids from Thailand. These are high-quality hybrid flowers that have longevity of 4-5 days and do not get spoilt easily,” said Niranjan Padhi, the manager of Ferns and Petals (Shaheed Nagar).
