Former Chhatrapur MLA Narayan Reddy released on bail in Odisha’s Ganjam

Berhampur: Narayan Reddy, former Chhatrapur MLA and key accused in the killing of a policeman in Odisha’s Ganjam district, was released today on bail after nearly 10 months imprisonment.

According to an official source, Reddy was previously sentenced to life imprisonment on July 31, 2023, by the Additional District & Sessions Judge (ADJ)-3 Court in Berhampur, along with 13 other accused.

Orissa High Court granted bail to Reddy and two of his accomplices, an official source said. The three were released from Berhampur Circle Jail in this city. Ten others will be released tomorrow.

It is pertinent to mention, on the intervening day (June 16, 1998), during a land acquisition by Tata Group for a project in Sindhigaon village of Ganjam district, a verbal spat ensued between some locals and on-duty policemen.

Reserve police Inspector Binay Meher was killed on the spot after a bomb was hurled at him.

A murder case was then registered against at least 22 persons, of whom six have died in the meanwhile and three others have become physically disabled.
