Former NTPC manager sentenced to 3 years in jail for taking bribe to release funds for Covid-19 items

New Delhi: A special CBI court in Ranchi has awarded three years rigorous imprisonment to the former manager of NTPC and also slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him for demanding a bribe from a man to release the payment for the Covid related materials like masks, sanitizers, PPE kits, etc.

Special Judge, CBI Cases, Ranchi sentenced Sagar Singh Meena, the then Manager (Safety), NTPC Ltd, Barkagaon, Hazaribagh (Jharkhand) to undergo three years rigorous imprisonment.

A case was registered against him by the CBI in 2020 on the allegations of demanding a bribe of Rs 7 lakh from the man.

During negotiation, the accused agreed to accept Rs 3 lakh through cheque from the complainant. The CBI after lodging the case laid a trap and caught the accused red handed.

The accused was produced before the competent Court and was remanded to judicial custody.

After investigation, a charge sheet was filed in the court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Ranchi on November 29, 2020.

During the course of trial, 13 witnesses were examined and 17 documents exhibited.

The trial court found the accused guilty and convicted him. The court noted that the CBI had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.
