Former Odisha Minister Raghunath Mohanty quits BJP

Bhubaneswar: Former minister Raghunath Mohanty resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha.

He tendered his resignation letter to Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal today.

Raghunath Mohanty, the former five-time MLA from Basta in Balasore district, had joined the BJP after resigning from the BJD in 2019. He fought the 2019 polls from Basta on BJP ticket but lost to BJD’s Nityananda Sahoo.

Mohanty was first elected to Odisha Legislative Assembly from Basta under Lok Sabha Constituency in 1990 Elections ticket. He retained the seat in 1995, 2000, 2004 and 2009 elections.

The strong BJD leader was removed from the party’s vice-president post and the party following his arrest in a dowry torture case slapped by his daughter-in-law Barsa Sony Choudhury. Later, he was inducted into the party in 2017.
