Bhubaneswar: Former minister of Odisha Surendranath Naik passed away at his residence here today. He was 93.

The BJD leader was suffering from age-related ailments for a long time. He had suffered a brain stroke in 2019.

The former 7-time MLA was a close aide of former Chief Minister late Biju Patnaik. He was the minister of the Agriculture and Education departments in the Odisha Government. He had represented Kakatpur Assembly Constituency in Puri district seven times during his political career. He was also the Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the demise of the former BJD Minister.

"Surendranath Naik was a popular leader among people. He had contributed immensely to the development of different sectors in Odisha. His demise is a great loss to the state," the CM said offering condolences to the bereaved family.

Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida also extended her condolence for the family of Naik.

The BJD Supremo and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik condoled the demise of the veteran politician.

Taking to X, he wrote, "I am saddened to learn about the demise of senior leader, former MLA, Minister and former Deputy Speaker Surandranath Naik. His dedicated efforts towards service and welfare of the people of Kakatpur will always be remembered. As an able politician and public representative, his philanthropic work will be a source of inspiration for all. May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to the bereaved family members."

The veteran leader was first elected to Odisha Assembly from Kakatpur on Utkal Congress ticket in 1971 elections. He won the elections four times on Janata Dal ticket. After formation of BJD, he fought the elections as the candidate of Naveen-led party in 2000 and 2004 from Kakatpur and won the polls.
