A local court in Odisha today sentenced four persons to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for kidnapping and raping a minor girl, who committed suicide later in Ganjam district.
According to reports, District Sessions Court judge Malaya Ranjan Das pronounced the quntum of punishment where he awarded 20-years RI and slapped Rs 15, 000 fine on each of the convicted persons, failing which they would undergo and extra 45 days RI.
The four convicted had kidnapped a Class X girl while she was on her way to tuition. The tormentors took the victim to a secluded place under Goshaninuagaon police station limits and gang raped her. The incident had taken place on June 17, 2013. After one year of the incident, the girl committed suicide by hanging herself on July 15 the same year fearing ignominy. She had named Ghasi Swain, Pintu, Tinku and Arun in her suicide note.
The four were found guilty under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and abetment to suicide.
