Four persons arrested for temple theft, stolen idols seized in Odisha’s Jajpur

Official sources informed that while three of the accused are from Uttar Pradesh, one of them is from Balasore district here.

Jajpur: Days after jewellery, precious idols and donation boxes were looted from two temples in Jajpur and Nuapada districts of Odisha, four members of the theft gang were arrested here today. As many as 31 stolen idols have been seized.

Official sources informed that while three of the accused are from Uttar Pradesh, one of them is from Balasore district here. The mastermind of the racket, however, is on the run.

A few days back, miscreants had looted idols of Lord Krishna, Nrusingha and Ram, Laxman and Devi Sita from Raghunathjew temple at Hirapur village under Dasarathpur block of Jajpur district besides taking away the gold and silver ornaments worn by the deities. The robbery came to light when the temple priest found the main shrine door broken the next day and filed a police complaint.

Tension had prevailed in the village following the heist as Holi is approaching and the temple was famous for celebrating the festival. According to locals, the cost of stolen idols and jewellery worn by the idols would be over Rs 1 crore.

At the same time, in a similar incident, three donation boxes containing around Rs 1 lakh were stolen from the Jagannath Temple at Sinapalli in Nuapada district. Police had started investigation after the priest found the door locks broken and filed a complaint.
