Fraudster posing as Google’s Odisha head held

Bhubaneswar: A fraudster posing as Odisha head of Google, the search engine major, was arrested on charges of looting mobile phones and laptops here in the state capital.

The accused was identified as Soumyajit Tripathy, a resident of Shastri Nagar locality in Bhubaneswar.

A Special squad of Commissionerate police apprehended the accused from Kalinga Nagar area in the city.

The youth was in the target of Commissionerate police since a long time as he was allegedly looting in guise of the Google’s Odisha head as well as a senior official in state government. The special squad initiated operation to nab the accused following a complaint lodged by Nikunj Khemani, a mobile store owner.

According to reports, Soumyajit had contacted a mobile phone store on premises of BMC Bhawani Mall in Bhubaneswar to purchase a mobile phone. Introducing himself as a senior government official, he had asked the shop owner to make two separate bills at one address in Jajpur.

When the parcel reached the address given by Soumyajit, no payment was made on purchase of the item, the store owner alleged.

Khemani tried to contact the accused for payment, but all his efforts went in vain. Later, he approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Intensifying the investigation, the police tracked the mobile number of the accused and nabbed him from his house.

The police also seized five iPhones, four laptops and a computer from his possession.

It is alleged that the accused has duped several electronic equipment stores in the city to the tune of some lakhs.
