Fresh trouble for Odisha gangster Raja Acharya after bail. Here’s how

Bhubaneswar: Possibility of gangster Raja Acharya’s release from jail after getting bail from Orissa High Court might face a new hurdle as the Twin City Commissionerate Police have decided to move the court seeking cancellation of the granted bail, a senior police official said.

‘We will file a petition seeking cancellation of the bail after obtaining necessary documents from the High Court. Opinions of legal experts are being sought in this regard,” said Twin City Commissioner of Police, YB Khurania.

The Orissa High Court had yesterday granted conditional bail to Acharya in a 2010 case pertaining to the abduction of an employee of Jyoti Motors and extortion of money from him. The single bench of the High Court comprising Justice JP Das granted the bail against two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.

Acharya, lodged in Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar, was likely to walk out of the jail as he has already been granted bail in other cases against him. However, the move of the Twin City Commissionerate Police might bring headache for him.

Notably, Acharya was convicted in the murder of judo coach Biranchi Das and serving life term in the Jharpada jail since 2008. He was arrested from Goa on May 28, 2008. The Bhubaneswar District and Sessions Court had convicted him in the case and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

However, Raja had petitioned the High Court challenging the lower court’s verdict. Since the matter did not come up for hearing in the High Court, Raja had moved the Supreme Court which granted him bail in the murder case on March 10, 2017.
