Berhampur: The private bus involved in the tragic accident in Odisha's Ganjam district that claimed at least 12 lives lacked permit and insurance, said Ganjam RTO Manas Sahu.
"The bus does not have permit for plying during night. The vehicle also lacks insurance. The bus owner is responsible for this incident. Action will be taken against him," the official said.
Furthermore, a report said the axle of the 25-year-old bus was in a damaged condition.
A complaint in this regard has been lodged with police while probe was underway.
As per information, the vehicle was registered on 26 March 1998 and its fitness is valid up to 24 November 2023. However, the insurance of the bus has expired as it was valid till 13 April 2023.
At least 12 persons of a marriage party were killed, and several others sustained injuries as the private bus carrying them and an OSRTC bus collided head-on near Digapahandi on the Berhampur-Taptapani road in Ganjam district, late last night.
Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M confirmed that seven others were injured during the accident.
The injured victims were promptly transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for treatment. Two of the wounded individuals have been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for better treatment.
Tragically, the deceased include seven members of a family and their relatives, all of whom were returning to Khandadeuli near Digapahandi after attending a wedding party in Berhampur.
