The incident occurred this morning when the girl was walking down the street near Brahmagiri market while a youth accompanied by his brother intercepted her and asked for her WhatsApp contact number.

When the girl refused to part with the personal details, the duo allegedly thrashed her in the busy market area, while the local people remained mute spectators to the incident.

The family members of the victim filed a case with the local police following which the sibling duo was arrested, police said today.

The prime accused has been identified as Ganesh Pradhan and his brother Kartik from Baisibati village under Brahmagiri police limits.

While the mother and the victim refused to give their comment to reporters, sources said that the villagers are mediating to solve the situation amicably.

The local police, however, claimed that the two accused have been arrested.

“The girl was beaten by the two youth when she refused to give her contact number. A case has been registered and two persons have been arrested in this connection. They will be forwarded to court today,” Brahmagiri IIC, Uma Shankar Singh said.

A case (17/17) has been registered under sections 354 (b), 323, 324, 427, 506, 327, and 34 of IPC.
