Girl student injured after being scalded by hot oil at Nua-O fest in Odisha’s Rayagada

Rayagada: A stampede-like situation was created during ‘Nua-O, Yuba Odisha Nabin Odisha’ programme held in Rayagada town of this district and two girl students who had come to the event sustained grievous injuries in the incident today.

One of the girls identified as Dipali Nayak, who is a Plus II student in a local women’s college, was injured after being scalded by hot cooking oil kept in a large cauldron. The other girl identified as Menaka Sabar, a Plus II student at a college in Gunupur town, felt severely suffocated due to the rush.

According to a private source, the tribal girl student Dipali was standing near the cauldron and waiting for her turn to take the food plate when a crowd pushed her from behind and she fell into it. There was a rush among participants during the mid-day hours for lunch leading to the fatal mishap.

The two injured students were rescued by some NCC volunteers and were immediately admitted to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Rayagada town in critical condition for treatment.

“Their condition is stable now,” a doctor treating them in the government-run health facility said.
