Odisha: Gold bars, rings worth over Rs 12L seized at Bhubaneswar Airport

Bhubaneswar: Air Intelligence unit of the Customs Department have seized gold bars and ornaments worth over Rs 12 lakh from two passengers who arrived at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here from Bangkok.

According to reports, Customs officials seized three gold bars and 143 gold rings having a combined weight of 378 gm from the two passengers who are natives of Thane in Maharashtra.

The passengers who had arrived here from Bangkok via Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia flight on the intervening night of March 27-28 had hidden the gold bars in their rectums while concealing the gold rings in the buttons on their shirts and trousers.

Both have been detained and further investigation is on.

Notably, officials of Air Intelligence unit of Customs department and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had on March 11 seized gold and foreign currency worth Rs 22.23 lakh from four passengers at the BPIA here.

The four passengers, who arrived here from Bangkok by an Air India flight, were intercepted by the Custom officials while they are trying to cross the green channel. The seizures were made after a thorough search of their baggage.

The four passengers who were detained by Customs officials hailed from Delhi, Kolkata and Cuttack.
