Gold jewellery worth Rs 16 crore seized from train in Bhubaneswar; 4 held

Bhubaneswar: The Government Railway Police (GRP) seized gold jewellery worth over Rs 16 crore from Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Konark Express from the railway station here today.

Besides, the cops also detained four persons in this connection for interrogation.

Reportedly, the four accused from Mumbai had come to Bhubaneswar in the train carrying four bags containing gold jewellery weighing 32.8 kg. All the accused identified as Hasmukh Lal Jain, Suresh Sahadev Kharey, Mahesh Bhonsale and Deepak Padel are residents of Mumbai.

Briefing mediapersons, DSP Chandrasekhar Sahoo informed that while patrolling, the GRP noticed four persons de-boarding the train with four bags. Suspecting their movement, the GRP detained them and took all of them to custody for interrogation. During the inquiry, the cops recovered 32.8 kg gold jewellery from the bags.

“They had brought the gold items to the state capital for selling purpose. Suspecting that the four were attempting to evade tax while doing the business, we called up the Income Tax Department and GST to assist in the inquiry. Later, an enforcement squad of Income Tax and GST reached the spot and verified their documents,” the senior cop said.
