The Central University of Odisha today conferred doctor of laws Honoris Causa to Gopal Subramaniam, former Solicitor General of India at a special convocation here.

Subramaniam expressed the award as his “greatest honour” in his life and vowed to strive to be of the use to the society.

A seminar titled “National Symposium on University Legal Education: Need of the Hour” organized on the occasion was inaugurated by Kalyanjyoti Sengupta, Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court. Speaking on the occasion, Sengupta laid down the salient features of Indian constitution describing India as a “constitutional democracy”. He opined that the Central University’s law school has an important role to play to make the tribals aware of their rights and duties.

Surabhi Banerjee, vice-chancellor of the University, traced the development of the Central University in Koraput and said the topic for the conference was chosen with the mission and vision of the University to establish a quality law school.
