Gravel smugglers attack tehsildar in Odisha; six detained

Jajpur: Tension prevailed at Mundamala Chhak in Odisha’s Jajpur district today when some villagers attacked Vyasanagar Tehsildar Sapan Kumar Nanda and other officials of the local administration while they were conducting a raid to nab gravel smugglers.

The villagers also beat up the local Revenue Inspector (RI) who had accompanied the Tehsildar during the raid.

On being informed police rushed to the spot and rescued the officials from the clutches of the villagers.

“When we were taking the accused into custody, some villagers pounced upon us and thrashed us. They also used filthy language and threatened to torch our official vehicle,” said Nanda.

Police have detained six persons including three women in connection with the incident.

“We have detained three men and an equal number of women. In this connection the Tehsildar has lodged a complaint. A case vide no.48/18 has been registered and investigation is on,” informed Amitabh Mohapatra, IIC, Dharmasala.
