Guests to be gifted handloom, handicrafts during Odisha Hockey WC

Bhubaneswar: Amidst preparation for the upcoming 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar, Odisha will showcase its exquisite handicrafts to the global audience during the mega international sports event.

Sources close to the development said that the State government is planning to present handloom and handicraft items to all the 16 participating teams as well as the dignitaries as the gift during Hockey World Cup, scheduled from November 28 to December 16 at Kalinga Stadium here.

The players, officials and guests will be welcomed with Ikat handloom stoles designed by the renowned weavers from western Odisha.

Sources said that the handloom and handicrafts department will promote popular crafts like Ikat weaving, dhokra, silver filigree, wood carving, appliqué work, wooden painted boxes and cane and bamboo work.

For the first time, the handicrafts from Nabarangpur will find a place in the event. The famous lacquerware boxes from the tribal district will also be presented to the guests and players, said national award winning lacquer artisan Kuntala Kumari Patra.

The artisan has been asked to make over 500 lacquerware boxes for the hockey event.

Worth mentioning, the boxes will be used for packaging as the lacquer is organic and sustainable by nature.
