Four Odisha cultural stalwarts to get Guru Kelucharan Samman

Noted Odisha culture stalwarts Guru Sudhakar Sahoo (dance), ), Pandit Umesh Chandra Kar (music) , Prashant Nanda (cinema) and Niranjan Satpathy (theatre) will be honoured with the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Samman for 2014.

This was announced by the director of Srjan Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, son of the celebrated Odissi Guru here on Friday.

Guru Ratikanta said the annual 20th Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, 2014 Award festival will be held at the Rabindra Mandap here from September 5 to 9 and the awards which carry a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each will be presented by chief minister Naveen Patnaik on the concluding day.

Giving details of the five-day event he said while Ramil Ibrahim of Malaysia would perform Odishi and Sasank Subramanium of Chennai would give a performance in Carnatic flute on the opening day, September 5 (Guru Diwas), Vaibhav Airekar of Mumbai and internationally-reputed drummer Anandan Sivamani would present their performances on September 6.

On September 7, Mumbai-based Daksha Mashruwala would perform Saggy Baggy (group presentation of Odishi) while Prashant Shah (USA) would perform Kathak and Neeladri Kumar would perform with the sitar on September 8.

On the concluding day, September 9, the cultural show will include Synthesis (abstract fusion) and Kubjaa, a mythological theme, Guru Ratikant said.

The Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Samman was instituted in 1995 by the Director of Srjan Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, son and disciple of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra to honour top achievers in the field of performing arts. For the last 19 years the Samman has been presented to four persons in the fields of Dance, Music, Cinema and Theatre.
