HAL for single agency to deal with overseas firms

Bangalore, April 5 :

State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Saturday said it favoured single nodal agency to deal with overseas original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

HAL chairman R.K. Tyagi also said they have decided to work with the Indian Air Force (IAF) on joint plans for defence preparedness, according to a statement released here.

HAL Hindustan-Aeronautics-LtdTop officials of the defence behemoth interacted Friday with IAF commanders at air headquarters in New Delhi on projects being executed and its strategic plans.

“Hand-holding is important considering the challenges involved in manufacturing and operational fronts,” IAF chief Arup Raha said on the occasion.

The decision to deal with suppliers and partners through a single agency comes in the backdrop of British aerospace major Rolls Royce admitting recently that it “bribed” Indian defence ministry and HAL officials for securing orders to supply aero-engines.

“As manufacturers and suppliers work with two or more agencies to strike deals, there is need for cohesion and understanding to deal with them on a single platform,” Tyagi observed.

The day-long meeting also reviewed the performance of IAF fleet, including MiGs (21,27 and 29), Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter, Mirage 2000, Hawk, Jaguar, Kiran, Pilatus trainer aircraft and the helicopters, which are built and serviced by HAL under licensed production.

“We also discussed on indigenisation, quality and delivery timelines, which are demanding due to supply chain, transfer of technology and shortage of skilled manpower in the aerospace sector,” Tyagi added.
