Hanuman coin racket: Odisha cop escapes from hospital

A police officer embroiled in a controversy over dealing with Hanuman coin fled from the District Headquarters Hospital here while undergoing treatment here on Saturday.

According to reports, the inspector in charge of Remuna police station Surendra Nayak was summoned by Malkangiri police in connection with the case where he was accused of dealing with copper coins, brass utensils of deities, numismatic articles to appear before it on August 13.

Nayak, however, went to the hospital on August 13 with complaints of chest pain. The doctors advised him for hospitalisation and asked him to get admitted to the medicine ward. Instead, he did not get admitted and disappeared from the scene.

“He was admitted to the hospital for complaints of chest pain but instead of undergoing treatment he left the hospital without information anybody,” Balasore Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Bhabani Shankar Pani said.

Following the incident, an FIR was lodged withTown Police Station against Nayak.

“Surendra Kumar Nayak took an outpatient department (OPD) ticket in the morning and then inpatient department (IPD) ticket in the evening for indoor admission. We lodged a complaint after hospital authorities informed about the incident,” Town Police Station IIC Dillip Sahu said.

Notably, while Nayak was posted as IIC of Kalimela police station along with Deepak Kumar Khandayatray (SI) posted at Poteru in the district and other two associates Jeetendra Kumar Mohanty (Constable) and SS Behera (Havildar) of 4^th SS Battallion were into collection of numismatic articles which they used to sell at exorbitant price.
