Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, typically falls in September or October, marking the end of the nine-day festival of Navaratri. The festival's name is derived from the Sanskrit words "Dasha" (ten) and "Hara" (defeat), symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

The primary significance of Dussehra is the commemoration of Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana, as described in the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. In some parts of India, effigies of Ravana are burnt to symbolize the triumph of righteousness over wickedness.

In addition to this, Dussehra also honors the goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
