India celebrates ‘Engineers’ Day’ on September 15 every year as it marks the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
History narrates Sir M Visvesvaraya as one of the nation-builders and ardent contributor in the field of engineering and education. He played crucial role in constructing dams, reservoirs and hydro-power projects of modern India. He worked as the chief engineer on several architectures including Karnataka’s Krishna raja Sagar dam and Hyderabad’s flood protection system.
Honouring Sir M Visvesvaraya’s contribution towards building of a modern and developed nation, the Government of India, in 1968, declared his birth anniversary to be celebrated as ‘Engineers’ day’.
About Sir M Visvesvaraya
Sir M Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 in a small village in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur. He completed Bachelor of Arts at Madras University and later pursued civil engineering at College of Science, Pune. Later, in 1917, he established Government Engineering College which is now known as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering, Bengaluru.
In 1955, Sir M Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna. He was also conferred the British knighthood. He also served as the Diwan of Mysore between 1912 and 1918.
