Harassed by eve-teaser, young girl commits suicide in Odisha

Bhawanipatna: At a time when gang-rape of an ANM student at a forest in Odisha’s Kalahandi has rocked the region, a college girl allegedly committed suicide in Madanpur Rampur area of the district after being harassed by a youth.

The deceased has been identified as Kabita Padhan of Alatara village. She was a +3 second year student of M. Rampur College in the district.

As per the allegations of the family members of the deceased girl, she was yesterday waiting for a bus at a bus stand for returning home, during which a youth of Seragarh village passed lewd remarks at her and thrashed her.

The girl then consumed poison at the bus stand, following which she lost consciousness. Locals rescued and rushed her to a nearby hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was initially shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital and later referred to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital in Balangir district.

She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at the hospital, late last night.
