Headmistress, Koida WEO suspended for death of sevashram inmate scalded by hot dal

Bhubaneswar: Fixing the responsibility in the tragic death of sevashram’s boy inmate scalded by hot dal, the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare department today suspended the school headmistress Karmel Bilung and Koida block welfare extension officer (WEO) Bikash Ranjan Naik.

The two government employees were ordered by Commissioner-cum-Secretary Roopa Roshan Sahoo not to leave their respective headquarters sans prior permission from the higher-ups concerned.

Similarly, the WEO has been slapped with a show-cause notice in connection with the fatal incident.

The administrative step was taken based on a preliminary investigation, a senior official informed.

On the other hand, acting on an FIR lodged by the WEO, police arrested the accused cook Tarini Naik.

It is pertinent to mention, the 14-year-old boy inmate of sevashram in Dengula village under Koida block of Sundargarh district died after sustaining burn injuries as hot dal fell on him.

The deceased was identified as Gelet Hanhaga of Kapatmunda panchayat. He was a Class VIII student of the residential school and had been residing in the educational institution.

On March 6, the cook asked the boy to assist in shifting a large utensil containing hot dal. The mishap took place as the utensil slipped from the minor’s hands while shifting it from a chullah.

The injured boy was rushed to a hospital in Koida in critical condition for treatment. Later, he was shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital the next day after his condition deteriorated. He succumbed while undergoing treatment, on March 12 evening.
