Bhubaneswar, May 26:

While the people of coastal Odisha had some much-needed respite from the blistering heat wave today, there was no relief for those in the interior districts where temperature remained above 45 degree Celsius at most places.

The mantle of the hottest place in the state was wrested from Angul, which had recorded the season’s highest temperature of 47 degrees yesterday, by Titlagarh where the mercury shot up to 47.6 degrees today.

Temperature remained above 45 degrees in Angul (45.1), Jharsuguda (46), Sambalpur (46.4), Hirakud (46.6), Bhawanipatna (45.7), Bolangir (46) and Sonepur (45.2).

However, the temperature fell appreciably in the coastal districts with most places recording temperatures below 40 degrees.

The state capital which had recorded the season’s highest temperature of 45.4 degrees yesterday, witnessed a drastic fall in temperature by 5.6 degrees to plummet to 39.8 degrees today.

Talking to the media, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said the sudden fall in temperature in the coastal district is due to a weak trough line stretching from coastal Andhra Pradesh across Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

“Under its influence, there is possibility of Nor’wester, rain or thundershower at one or two places in the coastal Odisha in the next 48 hours”, he said.

He, however, said though there would be a marginal fall in temperature in the interior districts, temperature would still remain at 45 degrees and above in some places over the next couple of days.
