Heatwave claims two lives in three days in Odisha

Bhadrak: With mercury at over a dozen places breaching the 40 degree celsius mark since last couple of days, a youth today died of suspected sunstroke in Odisha’s Bhadrak district.

The deceased identified as Indrajit Rout was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where he was pronounced dead.

The 33-year-old hailed from Arjunpur village under Dhamnagar block in the district.

My son fell unconscious due to intense heat after which we rushed him to hospital. He was declared dead in the hospital, deceased’s father Prahallad said.

This is the second death reported due to suspected sunstroke within a span of just three days.

An elderly person died of suspected sunstroke in Puri district on Monday. The deceased had gone to Tarana gram panchayat office under Astaranga block in Puri to collect his old age pension. However, he suffered sunstroke on the office premises and died.

Due to rising temperature across Odisha, the state government on Tuesday evening announced early summer vacation beginning Thursday. The notification directed all the educational institutes to suspend classes from April 18.
