Heatwave condition throws life out of gear in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Residents of parts of the western Odisha and interior districts sweltered in a heatwave today with the maximum temperature being recorded 40 degrees Celsius or above in 13 places of the State. People mostly stayed indoors and vehicular movement was minimal in most of the districts.

Titlagarh was the hottest place with the day temperature of 45.5 degrees Celsius followed by Talcher at 44.9 degrees Celsius, Balangir at 44.8 degrees Celsius and Bhawanipatna at 44.6 degrees Celsius.

Other places which recorded the maximum temperature above 40 degrees Celsius are as follows: Jharsuguda – 44.2 degrees Celsius, Angul – 43.5 degrees Celsius, Sambalpur – 43.4 degrees Celsius, Hirakud – 43.3 degrees Celsius, Boudh – 43.2 degrees Celsius, Sonepur – 42.2 degrees Celsius, Malkangiri – 42 degrees Celsius and Phulbani – 41.4 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department issued yellow warning for over some parts of Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Angul districts till 8.30 am of May 26. However, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at one or two places in Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati and Malkangiri districts, the IMD forecasted.

For three days from May 26, the IMD issued orange warning and predicted heat wave condition is very likely to prevail over some parts in Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Malkangiri, Kalahandi and Angul districts.

Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 34.5 and 34.8 degrees Celsius respectively.
