High-level delegates from FIH, Hockey India visit Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Odisha

The dignitaries inaugurated the Hockey Practice Centre within the stadium complex during the visit and expressed satisfaction with the progress in work and support extended by Odisha towards development of the sport.

Rourkela: Amid mounting excitement for the Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023, a delegation of International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Hockey India today visited the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela which would be co-hosting  the World Cup in Odisha. The team comprised Acting President Seif Ahmed and Chief Executive Officer Thierry Weil from FIH and Committee of administrators, Dr SY Quraishi and Zafar Iqbal from Hockey India. They were accompanied by Hemant Sharma, Chairman IDCO, Sports Secretary, Odisha, R Vineel Krishna, Bhupendar Poonia MD IDCO and other senior officials.

The dignitaries inaugurated the Hockey Practice Centre within the stadium complex during the visit and expressed satisfaction with the progress in work and support extended by Odisha towards development of the sport. The team is looking forward to hosting an iconic World Cup in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, they said.

The practice centre has brand new FIH certified turf, flood lights with seating capacity for 200 spectators, changing rooms, recovery area, fitness centre and allied facilities for players.

The main stadium work, as per reports, is going on in full swing and will be completed as per schedule.

Thanking the Odisha government for the warm welcome, acting President FIH Seif Ahmed said,”What we have seen here today is fantastic and I would like to thank the Odisha government and Hockey India for the work they have done. Odisha’s eagerness to be the perfect host gives us the confidence that collectivelyFIH, Hockey India and the Odisha government will again impress upon the hockey world.”

Committee members Hockey India SY Quraishi and Zafar Iqbal shared that Indian is hosting Hockey Men’s World Cup for the fourth time which is unique as no other country has hosted so many times. “When any event happens in Odisha, we know it is in safe hands. With great political leadership, everything is on track and we will create history,” they said.

Odisha Sports secretary R Vineel Krishna presented the status of the ongoing stadium projects as well as those relating to connectivity, accommodation and beautification projects.
