Higher education reforms: Model syllabus, common entrance in Odisha varsities soon

Bhubaneswar: Taking initiative for bringing reforms in the higher education system in Odisha, the State government will introduce a model syllabus and common entrance test for the students shortly.

The common choice-based credit syllabus (CBCS) and a common entrance test will be introduced for the UG and PG students in all the universities across the State.

The move came on the recommendations of five sub-committees comprising vice-chancellors of different universities at the State Higher Education Council here on Thursday.

The authorities decided to introduce the model syllabus to enable the undergraduate students from the State to compete with others both in national and international levels.

Sources said that the lecturers will be imparted training before introducing uniform syllabus, which will be finalised by next month.

Similarly, the graduates aspiring to be enrolled into PG courses will have to appear in an entrance test.

As per the decision at the meeting yesterday, there will be a common entrance test for PG admission.

According to reports, the students with 45% marks in Plus Three will be eligible to appear in the test. A merit list will be out for the admission into the courses in different subjects. Later, the admission will be conducted at the universities as per their rules.

Sources said that the Utkal University will conduct the common entrance test in Arts stream, while the examination will be conducted by the Sambalpur University in science stream and commerce by the Berhampur University.

The Students’ Academic Management System (SAMS) will be roped in for the management of the common entrance test, he said.

Earlier, the entrance test was mandatory in all the State-run varsities for admission into PG courses.

The process to bring reforms in the higher education department is underway since the past one year. The authorities aim to introduce the model syllabus and common entrance test from the academic session 2019-20, said State Higher Education Council vice-chairperson Prof Ashok Kumar Das.

With the implementation of these recommendations, the students from the State can perform well in national level entrance examinations, he added.
