Bhubaneswar: The water retention capacity of Hirakud dam in Sambalpur will soon be increased to 24 lakh cusecs from the current 15 lakh cusecs.

For this, all required procedures have already begun, said Union Water Resources Secretary UP Singh on the sidelines of a two-day Dam Safety Conference that began here today.

The Union Minister further said that Hirakud dam is completely safe and out of danger now. Besides, efforts are afoot for automation of the dam that has 98 flood gates (64 sluice gates and 34 crest gates) to release flood water.

On the other hand, the Odisha Government has decided to construct additional spillway on the right-side embankment to enhance the flood water discharge capacity of Hirakud dam.
