Kendrapara: A pickup van ran over a home guard killing him on the spot at Balabhadrapur in Odisha's Kendrapara district during vehicle checking, today.

The deceased was identified as Prabir Kumar Mohapatra.

According to reports, checking of vehicles was being conducted by the RTO Enforcement Squad on National Highway at Balabhadrapur to detect violation of traffic rules.

As the home guard tried to intercept the speeding scrap-laden van, its driver didn't stop the vehicle. Subsequently, the van ran over the home guard killing him.

Other members of the squad chased the van while the driver abandoned the vehicle at a village and absconded. The van has been seized by the squad.

On the other hand, tension ran high at the spot of the incident as irate locals staged road blockade by placing the body on road demanding compensation for the family members of the deceased.

Derabish police reached the place and tried to pacify the locals. The seized vehicle was brought to the police station while efforts were on by cops to trace and nab the erring driver.
