Bhubaneswar, Sept 20:

In a shocking case of ‘honur killing’, an 18-year-old married girl was set on fire by her parents at her rented house in Tarini Colony near Balakati siphon under Balianta Police limits on the outskirts of the city here on Friday for eloping with her lover four months ago.

Both her father Radhagovinda Mallik (42) and mother Shanti Lata (40) have been arrested by Commissionerate Police. The husband-wife duo set their daughter afire after pouring kerosene on her, police said.

The deceased, identified as Umabharti Mallik, a resident of Panapana village near Khantapada in Balasore District, was staying with her husband Nigamanada Malllik (23) of the same village in Tarini Colony under Balianta Police limits here.

According to reports, Nigam was working in a farm land owned by Radhagovinda in Panpana village. He was married but was in a relationship with Uma. They eloped four months ago after Uma’s family vehemently opposed their relationship because Nigam was already married. They had settled down at Balakati where Nigam was working in a garage.

Shantilata came to meet her daughter on Thursday and stayed with her. In what appears to be part of a pre-conceived plan, her father Radhagovinda arrived at the place on Friday morning and insisted on taking them home on the plea of organising a proper marriage for them.

They asked Nigam to get an auto-rickshaw. When Nigam went to the nearby market to get an auto, they gagged their daughter, tied her with a towel and set her on fire after pouring kerosene, said police.

“I found smoke emanating from the house and rushed to check it. I found Uma burning with her mouth gagged with a towel. We caught hold of her parents and informed the police,” said an eyewitness.

The body has been recovered and the accused produced in the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate court here. A forensic team has been roped in to gather evidence against the accused. Investigation is on to ascertain the motive, said police.
