Hooch death: Irate mob ransacks country liquor shop

An irate mob ransacked a country liquor brewing unit at Gurujang village on Sunday after the death of a villager who died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.

According to reports, Ganesh Nayak, a resident of Bhoi Sahi of Gurujang village working as a peon in the Botany department of PN College at Khordha, had gone to a nearby brewing unit to consume liquor in the morning hours on Friday.

Later, some villagers found him lying in a nearby paddy field.

The villagers rushed him to the district headquarters hospital at Khurda, where the doctors declared him as ‘brought dead’.

As soon as the news of the death spread in the village, the irate villagers ransacked the brewing unit and set all liquor containers on fire.

Later, they blocked Khordha-Gurujang road demanding compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased family and a job to one of the family members.

Following information, the Khorda tehsildar and the ADM, accompanied by a team senior police officers, rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers.

The district administration later announced Rs 5000 as ex gratia to the family of the deceased from the District Red Cross Fund.

The villagers withdrew the six-hour blockade at 4 pm.
