One killed in fresh mishap at Bomikhal overbridge in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: One labourer died and another was critically injured after a pile of iron rods fell on them near an under-construction flyover bridge  in Bomikhal area in Odisha capital this evening.

The labourer, identified as Ajay Vumicha (38) of Sundergarh, died in Capital hospital while Ananda Kumar Nayak was shifted to AMRI Hospital in the city.

According to reports, two workers were trapped when a stack of iron rods came crashing on them and the two got stuck for around 20 minutes before they were rescued by local people and fire brigade personnel.

The incident occurred when 8-10 labourers were working under the flyover. Hearing a loud noise, the locals rushed to the spot and informed police and fire personnel.

Following the incident, a huge crowd gathered at the spot and staged protest demanding immediate arrest of the contractor of the overbridge. The work is was being executed by Panda Infra.

On being informed, Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Kumar Sahu reached at the spot to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the District Administration has started inquiry into the incident and assured stern action would be taken against the wrongdoers.

” A technical inquiry will be done into the incident as it is suspected that there were some negligence on safety aspects. Strong action would be taken against those found guilty,” said Khurda Collector Nirmal Mishra, who visited the Capital Hospital.

Notably, a businessman was killed his daughter and 15 others were injured after a small portion of an under construction flyover bridge collapsed in September 10 last year.
