‘Hudhud’ damage in Odisha: 1521 schools, crops in over 2.5 lakh hectares affected

The severe cyclonic storm Hudhud has damaged 1521 schools across seven districts and standing crops in more than 2.5 lakh hectares in eight districts of Odisha, official sources said.

While the School and Mass Education department has pegged the cost of damage to the schools to the tune of Rs 28.15 crore, the Agriculture department, in its report has estimated the cost of damage to crops at Rs 23.77 crore.

In its report to the state government, the School and Mass Education department has said that 841 primary school buildings in Koraput, 372 in Gajapati and 104 in Rayagada district have suffered damage.

Apart from this, 1386 primary school buildings have been damaged in Ganjam, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Kandhamal districts.

Besides, 135 high school buildings, 25 office buildings of School and Mass Education department and 27 mid-day meal (MDM) houses in these seven districts have been either partially or completely damaged.

The repair and renovation of these structures would require Rs 28.15 crore, the department said in its report.
