Husband, in-laws get lifer over dowry death in Odisha

Kendrapara: The Kendrapara Additional District and Sessions Judge Court today awarded life imprisonment to three persons of a family for killing a woman over dowry.

In March, 2013, Laxmi, daughter of one Akshay Mallick of Kakharuni village under Pattamundai police limits in the district, was burnt alive by her in-laws at Kataramalla village for dowry. Acting on a complaint lodged by father of the deceased, police had arrested Laxmi’s husband Sushant Mallick, her father-in-law Agasta Mallick and mother-in-law Mukta in this connection.

Hearing the case, ADJ Pragyan Panigrahi today sentenced three of them to life imprisonment. The Judge pronounced the verdict after examining statements of seven witnesses.

The Judge also imposed a penalty of Rs 1,000 on each convict, defaulting which the three will undergo additional one year of imprisonment.
