Hyderabad returnee ends life at COVID Care Centre in Odisha

Kandhamal: With increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Odisha, a tragic incident was reported from Kandhamal district where a migrant returned from Hyderabad died by suicide at a temporary COVID care centre.

The deceased has been identified as Sampurna Majhi, a resident of Budelpadar under Tumudibandh police limits Kandhamal district.

According to reports, Majhi was undergoing treatment at a COVID care centre temporarily set up at the Government Girls’ High School, Badagaon, in Baliguda after he fell ill.

Majhi had returned to Kandhamal from Hyderabad during lockdown. After staying at a quarantine centre, he had returned to his village. However, his health condition deteriorated at home. He was brought to the COVID care centre on June 16 for treatment. His swab sample had been sent for COVID-19 test, but the test result is yet to come, informed Kandhamal Sub-Collector.

He said that the migrant was under mental stress.

After reportedly losing mental balance, Majhi ended his life by hanging himself with a bed sheet.

A suicide note has been recovered from the room where he was found dead.

The Sub-Collector made it clear that the death was not due to COVID-19.

The body was handed over to the family after conducting autopsy.

Following the incident, the district administration gave a COVID-19 kit to the deceased’s family and assured to provide financial assistance from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), Red cross and Harischandra Yojana.
