Ila Patnaik new Principal Economic Advisor to Finance Ministry

Renowned Indian economist Prof Dr Ila Patnaik, who hails from Odisha, has been appointed the new principal economic advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

She would take the place of Dipak Dasgupta who was holding the prestigious position until now.

Dr Patnaik is currently Reserve Bank of India (RBI) chair professor at the New Delhi-based National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP).

Born in New Delhi, Ila Patnaik did her B.A. in Economics from the Hindu College, University of Delhi, and  post-graduation and MPhil in Economics  from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, JNU. She got her doctoral degree  in Economics from the University of Surrey, Guildford, U.K.

She was an Economics Editor, Indian Express and wrote a fortnightly column in the Business Standard. She also worked as Editor, Macro Track, Macro Track, A Quarterly Update on the Indian Economy, NCAER.

She also hosted a television show ‘Policy with Patnaik from 2007 to 2009 on NDTV.

Her husband Ajay Kumar Patnaik is a professor at the JNU, New Delhi.
