Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has failed to open its account in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls in Odisha.
In the last 26 years, this is the first instance when the Naveen Patnaik-led party could not win a single Lok Sabha seat of the total 21 in the state.
The regional party, which was formed in 1997, fought the 1998 Lok Sabha elections in an alliance with BJP and got nine seats in Odisha. Its coalition partner BJP managed to secure seven Lok Sabha seats in the state.
The BJD, in coalition with the BJP, improved its Lok Sabha seat tally to 10 in 1999 while its alliance partner got nine seats.
The party once again fought the Lok Sabha polls in an alliance with the BJP in 2004 and managed to secure victory in 11 seats. The BJP bagged seven seats.
After snapping its ties with the BJP in 2008, the BJD went for the 2009 Lok Sabha polls alone and its candidates came victorious in 14 seats. The Congress party got six seats while the BJP failed to win a single seat in the state.
The party managed to win 20 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, its highest tally, in 2014. The BJP managed to get only one seat.
However, the regional party’s Lok Sabha seats came down to 12 in 2019 polls while the candidates of BJP came victorious in eight seats.
Despite ruling the state for 24 years uninterruptedly, the BJD could not win a single Lok Sabha seat in Odisha in 2024 polls.
Candidates of the BJP secured victory in 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state in this year’s polls. The Congress party got one seat.
