Kalyansinghpur: Hundreds of Dongaria tribals from Niyamgiri region gheraoed Kalyansinghpur police station in Rayagada district today protesting against police action and demanding the release of two locals earlier picked up by the cops suspecting the duo to be Maoist informers.
“Police yesterday picked up two tribals for no reason and must be released soon,” some locals rued.
A police source said that the tribals from about 121 nearby villages armed with traditional weapons and led by Niyamgiri Surakhya Samiti president Sikaka Lada congregated at the police station in the morning.
“Three of our guys named Puspa Sikaka, Bari Sikaka and Drinju Kruska had gone to a nearby marketplace in Lanjigarh and were picked up by some policemen in a van while they were on their way back home. However, Drinju managed to flee and later informed locals about it,” the outfit chief said.
“Policemen are saying that the cops have not picked up any such tribal. If our guys will not be presented before us within a deadline of next two hours, then we will intensify our protest. Even to the extent we will set the police station on fire in the days ahead if our demand is not met,” Lada warned.
The locals shouted slogans alleging the police action as illegal. They attempted to barge into the police station several times but any untoward situation was averted by the police. Tribals are stubborn on their demand and the agitation was still underway till the filing of this report.
