Bhubaneswar: The India Post has assisted a 95-year-old woman of Odisha’s Gajapati district to open a pension account at her doorstep.
The family members of Labang Gaya had reportedly carried her on a cycle rickshaw to a bank in Parlakhemundi area of Gajapati to draw old age pensions a few days ago.
Labang was unable to collect her pensions from the bank for last three months. Her family did not have adequate money to arrange a vehicle to carry her to the bank, sources said.
The elderly woman returned home empty handed as the bank asked her to contact the local municipal administration for pensions, sources added.
After coming to know about the incident, officials of Parlakhemundi Post Office reached Labang’s house and opened a zero balance India Post Payment Bank account in her name.
Henceforth, the elderly woman will draw her pensions at the doorstep, said an official of India Post.
“My grandmother was facing a lot of problems to get her pensions. The bank officials and the local municipal administration did not help us in this regard. The postal employees have opened an account in the name of my grandmother and assured us that she would draw pensions without any difficulty,” said Labang’s granddaughter.
