India’s first robotic machine to produce artificial limbs in Odisha

Cuttack: Making of artificial limbs in Odisha will be now possible with installation of a robotic machine at Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTAR) at Olatpur here.

The CAD/CAM based machine imported from France at cost of Rs 2.72 crore is the first robotic device in India to be functional at the country’s premier institution in the field of rehabilitation in September, said SVNIRTAR Director Dr SP Das.

The device has already reached the institution. With operationalisation of the robotic machine, a new era will begin in field of artificial limb transplantation and patients need not to wait for months for limb transplant, he said.

The SVNIRTAR has unique identity in Odisha as well as outside the State for artificial limb transplantation and physiotherapy. Despite shortage of doctors and class IV employees at the institution, several developmental programmes have been successfully executed, Dr Das.

The robotic device has been purchased from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of Nalco.
