Infant thrown by mother into fire succumbs in Odisha

Cuttack: The infant, who was thrown by her mother into fire over family feud, succumbed to burn injuries here last night.

The seven-month-old baby girl was undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after she was shifted from the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

The baby was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. She breathed her last at around 11.00 pm.

The incident triggered shock among the locals at Salia Sahi slum and adjacent area in Bhubaneswar.

According to reports, Raghunath Pingua and his wife Suna Pingua had been indulged in arguments over family issue many times after Suna delivered a baby girl few months ago. Out of anger, she set the clothes of her husband on fire and threw her baby into it following heated arguments with her husband over an issue at the home in Salia Sahi on Thursday morning.

Fortunately, Raghunath reached the spot and rescued his baby. He rushed the Capital Hospital for treatment. Later, the infant was referred to the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack. She was admitted to the hospital with 60% burn injuries.

The mother of the baby was said to be in a state of shock following the incident.

The Nayapalli police detained Suna Pingua in connection with the incident.
