International Literacy Day 2022 Theme, Significance, History

International Literacy Day is observed annually on September 8. It was  declared by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference.

It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

International Literacy Day 2022 Theme: “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces”

It will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.

At the global level, a two-day hybrid international event will be organized on 8 and 9 September 2022, in Côte d’Ivoire.
