IPL 2022: Lucknow, Ahmedabad teams added to tournament

Bhubaneswar/Mumbai: Starting from 2022, there will be ten teams vying for the prestigious Indian Premiere League (IPL) trophy as two more IPL teams were added today.

Sources said the RPSG Ventures Ltd bought the Lucknow IPL team for Rs 7090 crore whereas Irelia Company Pte. Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) won the bid for the Ahmedabad IPL team for Rs 5,625 crore.

The Governing council of the IPL had issued an invitation to tender to acquire the right to own and operate two new franchises. Accordingly, the bids were submitted by the authorized representatives of the interested parties at Dubai today.

The IPL 2022 season will comprise ten teams and 74 matches wherein each team will play seven home and seven away matches.

In his comment, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said, “True to IPL’s motto of where talent meets opportunity, the inclusion of two ne teams will bring more domestic cricketers from our country to the global stage…the IPL is provided to be a wonderful instrument in globalisng the game of cricket. I am keenly looking forward to IPL 2022.”

Earlier this year, the BCCI had announced that the IPL will be expanded from eight to ten teams. Six cities were shortlisted out of which two were supposed to make it to the cash-rich tournament. The six cities are Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Lucknow and Ranchi.

During IPL 2021, Chennai Super Kings led by MS Dhoni become champions for the fourth time, beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the final in Dubai.
