Baripada, July 31:
Tension prevailed at a village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district this morning after a herd of elephant damaged acres of crop and at least 14 houses yesterday night in Manada village under Jashipur Block in the district.
Irate villagers blocked the Jashipura-Manada road for hours today demanding compensation to the victims and a long-term solution to the elephant menace.
Police and forest officials reached the village and have begun an operation to drive away the pachyderms numbering around 16.
It’s suspected that the herd of elephant has strayed into the village from neighbouring Jharkhand.
