Irate villagers ransack sub treasury after mysterious death of home guard

Umerkote (Nabarangpur), Mar 6:

Irate people of Sanakumari village today ransacked the sub treasury office at Umerkote in Nabarangpur district following the death of a home guard of their village under mysterious circumstances.

The body of the home guard Baduram Bhatra was found hanging from the ceiling inside the office room by the office staff this morning.

As news about Bhatra’s death spread, angry villagers ransacked the office. They rubbished the police theory of possible suicide and alleged that it was a case of murder.

Following information, a team of Umerkote police rushed to the spot. However, the villagers pelted stones at the policemen, injuring some of them.

When the situation went out of control, police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob.

Talking to newsmen, IIC of Umerkote police station Saroj Kumar Upadhyay said the deceased may have committed suicide.

“Police have begun investigation into the death of the deceased”, he said.

The villagers continued their protest near the sub treasury office till late in the evening, reports said.
