Japanese encephalitis: 3 more die in Odisha’s M’kangiri, toll rises to 19

With three more children succumbing to Japanese encephalitis today, the death toll due to the disease in Odisha’s Malkangiri district climbed to 19.

As many as 16 children had died of the disease within a fortnight by Monday. The disease has assumed epidemic proportions in two blocks-Kalimela and Korukonda.

At least five children from each block in the district have been afflicted with the disease and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the district.

A four-member medical team from MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur is camping at the district headquarters hospital here and is treating patients.

Besides, the district administration has intensified mosquito eradication and cleaning programmes in the affected areas to control the spread of the disease.
