Sambalpur: After a decade, jaundice has resurfaced in Odisha's Sambalpur town, causing concern among the residents. According to the District Collector, 82 cases have been identified so far.
The number of cases is on the rise as the count was 74 yesterday while it rose to 82 today. Preliminary investigations suggest that the consumption of street foods might be contributing to the spread of the infection.
Similar to the outbreak in 2014, suspicion has arisen regarding the quality of PHD water. District Collector Agrawal Akshay Sunil said daily sample collection and testing are ongoing. Once the reports are available, the administration will intensify awareness campaigns in the affected areas, he said.
The health department is conducting door-to-door surveys in infected areas. The department is also keeping a close watch on the situation and providing necessary medical facilities to everyone. Currently, no one has been hospitalized, although partial effects of jaundice are present among the infected.
Previously, cases were identified in Kumbharpada, Saliabagicha, Pensionpada, and Dhobapada areas. However, with the recent identification of two new cases in Hirakud Colony, the administration is focusing to curb further spread of the disease.
