Even as two more children died of the dreaded vector-borne Japanese Encephalitis (JE) today in Odisha’s Malkangiri taking the death toll to 90 in the district this season, Director Health Services of the state government claimed that the situation has improved and it was under control.

“People are scared due to the situation arising out of JE and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases in Malkangiri since September till date. But if you look at the situation now it is not like as it was earlier. There has been improvement in the situation in the last three days. The disease has been brought under control,” informed Dr Kailash Das, Director Health Services to reporters here today.

“The increasing trend of the disease has been arrested and it is gradually on the decline. If climatic conditions remain favourable, the activity of the virus will slow down, within two weeks on the maximum incidence of deaths will decline,” he added.

While Surjya Madhi (2) of Mudakhala village under Korukonda block of the district succumbed to the disease in the ICU of the District Headquarters Hospital in the afternoon today, another child Sumitra Kope (4) of Paknaguda village under Mathili block died of the disease in the evening.
